"Ally, you're sick but we don’t know why."

When I was 13, I was diagnosed with an unknown autoimmune disease with severe arthritis in all my joints as a side effect. Simple movements would cause immense pain and only grew worse as I grew up. I spent a lot of time at The Children’s Hospitals and Clinics – Minneapolis.

During the years that followed, I found myself on many different drug treatment plans, including chemotherapy to stop my immune system from attacking itself. I took many pills a day and gave myself three injections of chemotherapy each week. I had blood work every other month and had frequent appointments at Children’s. I was on this treatment plan until June 2015, at which time I was in a very short remission.

My symptoms returned with a vengeance in October 2015. By April 2016, I had no choice but to resume chemotherapy to prevent permanent damage to my joints. I elected the oral method versus injection this time, thinking it would be easier to manage while away at college. Though mentally it is easier to administer, the added intensity of the nausea had physically been a challenge. In March 2017 I entered full medicinal remission, although the daily chronic pain was still a challenge, the threat of permanent damage had ceased.

Now in 2023, I have become a patient at Mayo Clinic to take my diagnosis journey to the next level. After many different tests, we still don’t have any answers but we are a step closer. My doctors believe I am suffering from Lupus or an Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disorder. I have resumed treatment for Lupus to help with pain management, and for now we continue testing every 6 months to see if anything new can help lead us to a full diagnosis.

During my visits to Children’s, I came face to face with other sick kids, some in worse shape than me - kids that were also scared and in pain. Because of those interactions, and the perspective it brought to my own situation, I decided to face my personal adversity in yet another way, using my sewing machine. Thus, at 15, the concept of Allyhoo was born – to provide comfort, hope and a diversion from pain.

Since then, Allyhoo continues to provide hope and happiness to children all around. The love an Allyhoo brings puts a smile on a child’s face and reminds them that people DO care. I care! For every Allyhoo order received, one goes to the customer and an identical twin is donated to kids in hospitals in the donor’s name.

What People Are Saying

"Allyhoo has been the best opportunity in my life! It has opened my life to so many new things in such a short time. If I had never learned about Allyhoo I don't even know who I'd be. It's so satisfying to sew stuffed animals for sick kids and the people who support us, and I'm so grateful!"

— Faith Lenzmeier

“Allyhoo is something special. To me, it's something that allows me, just an ordinary person, to use my craft to make an extraordinary change in someone's lives. Through this, I can help to make the world a little bit brighter.”

— Allison Hennes

"What a wonderful company that brings love and comfort to kids going through rough times. I enjoy being a part of this effort to make wonderful stuffed animals. Makes my heart feel good!!"

— Glady Pauly

"In the nearly seven years I have worked at Children’s Foundation, I have never seen an in-kind item as unique as Allyhoo. These colorful, vibrant, cuddly pillows provide comfort and inspire happiness for our patients - both of which are much-needed during a hospital stay."

— Mollie Loiselle, Children’s Hospital & Clinics

"I have one of the very first Allyhoos, (along with many others). All of them hold a very special place in my heart as well as my daughters! We love being part of such an amazing charity!"

— Meghan M. Jordan, MN

"I started helping Ally with Allyhoo before Allyhoo was a nonprofit-before I understood the value of volunteering for a bunch of strangers my age, younger, or even a little bit older. I was just having fun with my best friend, designing, cutting out fabric. I volunteered for my best friend because in high school, your best friend is the most important person in your life! Everything changed though as soon as we got our first positive feedback from parents of patients, the first donation at The Children’s Hospital, and finally the very first patient we met! Allyhoo means so much to me and has since 2014 when we started making a difference in these kids lives. I am beyond grateful to be apart of a business that makes such a positive impact in the lives of kids, some who are going through the unimaginable. Allyhoo means the world to me, and to some kids who receive one in the hospital, it still means more!"

— Haley Johnson

"Patients love receiving Allyhoos while they are here. Allyhoos are so unique that they are loved by all. Allyhoos are perfect from the 3 year old girl who loves pink to the 12 year old boy who is a Viking’s fan."

— Child Life Specialist, Children’s Hospital & Clinics

“I’ve had a glimpse of Allyhoo from it’s beginning. I know how deeply personal the mission of Allyhoo is and the passion that drives the team. Their dedication to providing comfort, care and support to children in challenging circumstances is extraordinary. The only thing better than volunteering for Allyhoo, is seeing the face of a child receiving an Allyhoo light up with a smile. There’s nothing more special than seeing a child hug their Allyhoo for the very first time!”

— Cara M

"I love volunteering for Allyhoo and I love all of my Allyhoos."
